The Gruelling Ride-Klang to Ipoh

I have just received this great news eventhough it took place a month ago.Few people are aware that besides running activities, the KPAC has a group of cyclists who is actively organising rides and also participate in top level cycling and ironman competitions.

On 17th of November, the eve of KRI road race, our heroes, spearheaded by our very own secretary,Mr Ong Teck Keong took the challenge to ride to Ipoh via the old trunk road from Klang town. The rest of the group are Yap Leong Chin,Yee Sing Seng,Hansome Quek,Gan Leng Leng,Ma Hong Choon,David Cheam and Chua Ah Boon.

The journey started near the Klang Parade shopping complex in Jalan Meru at about 7.45 am and they headed to Teluk Intan spiritedly.En route the ride they stopped at Sg Besar for a short break and also to refill their drinking bottles.I was told that the traffic's volume was low and the cloudy weather allowed our friends to enjoy their ride through the beautiful sceneries of coconut plantations, streams and also paddy fields.

At Teluk Intan, they stopped for a simple lunch and it was already noon, prompting them to resume their journey before another two short breaks for refilling again. The weather was kind to them all the way.The first few cyclists reached the destination at around 5.45 pm and the last was 6.30 pm.

They resided at the Heritage Hotel at Jalan Raja Dihilir and according to Mr Ong,the hotel management was very friendly, helpful and also kind to allow them to keep their racing bikes which can be dismantled, in the rooms.

The whole ride took them approximately 10 hours, covering a distance of 235 km.What a gruelling ride and definitely a back breaking one too.A big salute to the KPAC cyclists.

The next morning, one of them participated in the 12 km race and emerged 4th in the 'F' category. He is Mr Yee Sing Seng, completed the course in 52 min 43 seconds. It was an amazing feat by this 'ironman' and he made us very proud that day.

CHARITY WORK-THE KIND HEARTED RUNNERS

Below are pictures by courtesy of Mr Ng Thean Chor, our assistant treasurer.

The event took place several weeks ago (to be exact,on 11th of September) but l feel the KPAC activities must be made known to our readers. Our committee member,Mr Lim Swee Chai's employer, who wished to remain anonymous,is kind and generous enough to contribute lots of grocery to some orphanages and also to some needy one.

The KPAC was chosen to distribute the foodstuff such as rice, cooking oil, biscuits, rice vermicelli, spices, instant noodles, dried foodstuff and lots more.

A number of volunteers help the distributing works by transporting the goodies to two unnamed orphanages which are located in Simpang Lima roundabout and Batu 3,Jalan Kapar,Klang and also the Good Samaritan Home in Southern Park, also in Klang vicinity.

The voluntary works was headed by our secretary,Mr Ong Teck Keong.

Uncle Francis, second from left,a senior member of KPAC,did not wish to be left out in this charity work.

This picture was taken at the Batu3,Jalan Kapar orphanage.I'm sure it was a very touching moment for everyone to witness the less unfortunates, depending on contributions to make ends meet.

This orphanage is situated near the Simpang Lima roundabout. Most of the unfortunates are young children and they need our helps, not only materialistic but love and educations.

Just a simple conclusion, to KPAC members and fellow runners, running is maybe good for our heart but a kind one is always the most beautiful.

RUN FOR PEACE 2007

The above run was organised by the SOKA GAKKAI MALAYSIA,SELANGOR , a Buddhist culture association on 25th November, last sunday at Taman Klang Jaya.As the name suggested, this run was meant to promote peace to their members, friends and the Klang community. It was a non competitive run and no prizes or rewards were offered, hence it did not attract many serious runners, probably a handful turned up just to sweat it out because there wasn't any race on that particular morning.

Participants were greeted by members of SOKA GAKKAI chanting 'good morning' and 'welcome'
in Mandarin.A very pleasant way to start a morning run.

But the total turnouts for this event, i estimated more than 2 thousand, where SOKA members comprised more than 80%.This shows that they are very disciplined and supportive towards the activities they organise.

Runners at the starting line, wearing same ocean-blue t-shirt,you will feel awkward if you wear other than this round collar shirt.

The run was delayed because there were warm up session, followed by speeches by the association officials. It was flag off at around 8.00 am and the first to go was the men's category which was an 8 km run followed later by the women's,a 6 km.It was a hot and humid morning but most of the participants were enjoying the run.

Instead of medal or certificate, runners were given a piece of coloured sticker at the finishing line.

Surprisingly there were 2 water points for this short run and road markers were well placed. There were road marshals and officials at every corners, guiding and cheering the runners.

See the background, runners 'peace it together' on the white board.

At the finishing line, every runners were given a piece of coloured paper sticker to paste on a provided white board to show their support towards the run.I was told that the board would be handed over to an UN representative.

KRI 12KM ROAD RACE 2007

This is one of the most participated race events by KPAC members besides our own. And of course it is also one of the most well and beautifully organized race with more than 100 lucky draw gifts and trophies to be won by participants besides the beautiful pewter medal. It was rated as a 7 stars event by some bloggers.

Taman Rekreasi Sultan Abdul Aziz or better known as the Polo Ground was chosen as the main venue for this year's event.Still fresh in my mind, last year it was held at Lost World of Tambun,Sunway City. This year route is rather flat and the fine cool weather allowed many runners to produce their personal best timing.

As for KPAC members' participation this year, many thanks to our president,Mr Wong Soon Pin for his arrangements of accommodation and also bib collections. Most of us occupied the Heritage Hotel at Jalan Raja DiHilir,a stone throw away from the starting point.

It was a proud day for KPAC because there were 6 members finished the race in the top 10 ranking in their respective categories. The most outstanding one is Siow Kek Keong who emerged second in the 45-49 age category, followed by Dhan Bahadur in 3rd placing in the 40-44 age category and he clocked the fastest time among all the KPAC runners-47 minutes 01 seconds. But my salute should have to be given to Khoo Thiem Seng as the most improved KPAC runner,he finished 8 in his category.

Below are some results l managed to compile from fellow KPAC members after the race.

The first KPAC race report-AWANA GENTING TRAILBLAZER 2007

This is the first race report to be posted in the KPAC blog. The Awana Genting Trailblazer was held today - 11 November 2007.Syanizam and l were so excited about this adventure racing since this is our first participation in the so called "fun of trail running" .

We reached our destination early and it was still dark.We collect our race bibs and goodies bags and started to put on our running attire. On our way to the starting point,we met Gunaseelan and his partner Naresh Kumar- the pre favourite of the race.We chatted for a while to gain some knowledge and experiences because they were here last year. They told us so many frightening happenings during the race such as bruises, slippery trail, steep paths and the worst, this little creepy creature-the leeches. We were not prepared at all and just prayed that everything will be smooth.

We met some KPAC members at the field and one of them was Hansom Quek, our committee member. He participated in the wild veteran category.

At 8.30 am,the wild category runners were flagged off.The wild category is a 14 km run and it consists of four groups based on age combination, same genders and mixed genders.Next to go was the mild category which the distance to cover is 8 km.

Syanizam and l registered ourselves in the mild category. We started off in a quite fast pace because we wanted to break off from the slow runners to avoid "traffic jam" at the" mouth" of the trail.Everything was good, not until in the midst of the race.l was already tired and almost worn out by then and couldn't control the momentum of myself at one of the steep hills. My legs were wobbling and I fell, injured my left leg.

The second half of the race was a most suffering one for me.My partner,Syanizam was far in front while l walked and "crawled" most of the time and boy, it was very torturing and at one point, l thought of giving up!But Syanizam waited for me at some difficult paths to lend me his hand.He even pushed and encouraged me to carry on till the finishing line.I'm grateful to find a partner like him.

We crossed the line together and were positioned 13 with a time of 1 hour 31 minutes 14 seconds.l was very glad it was over and looked at myself,it covered with mud and of course bruises especially both hands. Now l understand why some elite runners wore hand gloves. We thought it was the cold environment but we were wrong. It was the thorns and sharp edges of some certain kind of plants and bamboo trees.

Looking at the hard earned medal,Syanizam and I promised to come back next year and surely we will be well prepared

KLANG PACERS ATHLETIC CLUB - THE OPENING CEREMONY CUM BREAKFAST RUN - 28/10/2007

The inaugural ceremony was held at NO:7A, Jalan Mohd Tahir 8, Taman Sri Mewah 4 Off Sungai Jati, Klang (KPAC official address) last Sunday. 20years after the club was formed finally members can really look into what the club lead by president, Mr Wong Soon Pin and his group of committees had achieved so far and what we have brought, in term of sport developments as well as better financial situation.

THE BREAKFAST RUN
It was a moderate run organized to get members together. The 10k run was initially planned for seasoned runners but surprisingly it attracted few first timers as young as 13 years old. And as usual, our friend, Encik Zainuddin offered himself to lead the warm up session which took about 20 minutes. Approximately 30 members participated in the run and off they go at 6.50a.m. The front pack was lead by our ever active and hardcore runner president.

More members arrived later for the shorter distance fun run -5k which the vice president Mr Lum Kiok Ming took charge. Members of all races including new faces participated and enjoyed this run very much.

THE OPENING CEREMONY
It was indeed a memorable day and a proud one for us, the KPAC members. The opening ceremony of our club house was officially graced by our two honorable advisers, Dato Sellathevan and Mr Law Kee Sok. Thank you very much to both of them for spending some time with us.

The simple ribbon cutting ceremony was withnessed by those attended with overwhelming joyous applause.

Food, fruits and drinks were served. We even have a separated breakfast for our Muslim runners and friends.

Later, the much awaited event arrived, the lucky draw. And again our advisers were given the honors to pick the lucky ones alternately.

The ceremony came to the end at around 10.30a.m
